Is silver now more fashionable than gold?

After having done a bit of research amongst younger people I have found that silver indeed has become more popular amongst the young and if something becomes popular it usually becomes fashionable as well.

I suppose the main reason for the popularity of silver against gold is obviously the price, and now with the economic crisis as well, it’s going to be more prohibitive for some people to buy gold jewellery where as buying silver can easily fit into their budget.

If you notice the shop windows of normal jewellery shops, the ones you find in your local high street, because I’m not talking about Tiffany or Cartier or anything as grand as that, you will see that whereas many years ago three quarters of the shop window was filled with gold necklaces, bracelets, rings, ear-rings and charms now it is almost completely a reverse situation.  In fact a jeweller told me that they hardly ever have much demand for gold items any more and so that is why they concentrate mainly on selling silver.

But apart from this it seems that silver flatters the skin of more people than gold does or better said, flatters pale skin more and the proof is that more often than not when a marketing firm want to advertise some gold jewellery they use a dark skinned model to show it off as on that type of skin it does look really good.

Diamond stones (or better said zircons) also seem to look better surrounded by silver rather than gold, it’s really a thing of colour as a diamond is whitish and so is the colour of silver.

There is a whole range of very beautifully crafted designer jewellery in silver to tempt people and lure them away from gold.

The other plus side is that if you get your jewellery stolen, it’s not like you will have lost thousands of pounds worth but just the sentimental value.
