How to make old clothes look fashionable

You may have clothes in your wardrobe that don’t look like anything that you are seeing in the fashion magazines and so because you want to be trendy you just don’t touch them and they get left there year after year, but there are a few things that you can do to bring them up to date.

Let’s deal with the old white shirt-waister dress that could be quite useful during the summer months but it just doesn’t inspire you to wear it.  Well one idea is to dress it up with ethnic type jewellery which is very much in fashion.

A large chunky necklace with wooden beads and brass coins dangling round your neck, a pair of wooden loop ear rings, a chunky brass ring with a topaz like stone, a fake leopard belt slung round at hip level and some gladiator like sandals in dark brown leather and you will really have revamped this dress and brought it right up to date.

And what about a plain old jean skirt.  Well you could first tie it up in a ball with elastic bands or string and give it a wash with bleach in the washing machine so that it comes out unevenly faded.  Then later when it has dried begin by sewing small silver sequins all along the side seams, down the zip and around the edges of the back pockets and also the front ones, in other words where ever you see any stitching is where you attach silver sequins.  Now thread a slim white belt through the loops of the waistline and wear it with a navy blue and white striped nautical t shirt and some red bead ear rings and a pair of red moccasins.

When an outfit is all one colour you can afford to use quite a few accessories to dress it up as is the case with the white shirt-waister, but in the case of the ornate jean skirt and all those stripes on the nautical t shirt you already have a lot of distraction there and so you don’t need to add much jewellery because then it might just look too much.
